HANNAH HOCH SKETCHBOOK

Hannah hoch is famous for photo montage so I started cutting up images and mix matching them to create the style she does.

I've drawn Bowie from album covers in his most iconic looks ( scary monsters album and Alladin sane ) as I didn't have enough sketches of him in my white sketchbook , I drew him in the hannah hoch section in hopes to put these two pictures together and make it into the style of her work.

Again adding photos from the internet to let people know what peices of her work I was focusing on whilst experimenting ..

This was the outcome ... Using coloured pencils I drew the left side of Alladin sane and the right side from scary monsters album cover.

DIEGO MAX PAGES SKETCHBOOK

I started with some Diego max drawings because it was the point where I was at with my other sketchbook research.. Using coloured pencils I realised this was  one of my favourite techniques to do as the drawings stand out so much and look really bold

Developing research, I've drawn a sketch of madonna and re created it in the style of Diego max ( focusing on anatomy )

I looked mainly at 2 peices of his work and have put the pictures at the side so when people read my sketchbook they will understand why I've drawn what I have. Love this sketch! I loved experimenting and realised shading and detailing was a strong point for me, this has made me produce better drawings throughout this project and push myself more.

Here is the same drawing of madonna this time looking at completely different peice of Diego Max's work I've experimented with newspaper going over in tea bag to give it a retro vintage look like he uses in his prints & cut out wallpaper peices from a wallpaper I purchased because the butterflies and flowers reminded me of Diego Max's work. I think it works well, also a lot of annotation in my sketchbook. Slowly getting better at it.

I then used the same image one more time this time reversing what I'd just done, I drew over newspaper as his works backgrounds usually have newspaper peices in and using shading and coloured pencils I re created madonna and gave her some butterflies wings.

..

Although it does have great research I started a smaller black paper sketchbook to start some drawings which went with my research...

First sketchbook! Information...

My first sketchbook it includes ALOT of writing because writing down what I know about everything has helped me understand my project more and also I've got more than enough information to add things I've learnt to my boards, I like to look back at the pages I've done because I've documented my progress and it just helps me when producing boards.

My first sketchbook

I started this sketchbook very early in the project, I've used it to add my research into its full of information on 1980s events trends music films etc, personal research, Hepworth gallery visit, iconic research & of course my 4 main chosen icons and chosen artists.

Although it does include pictures from the internet and some material I bought to add to my research ( E.g lace and fishnet for madonnas gloves ) shown in older post! It didn't have a lot of my own sketches ...
I've been looking at Pinterest on other peoples art work on the icons and I love how this looks, all the different personas and styles looks amazing!!

Dadaism

These are my favourite peices of Hannah Hochs Dadaism movement work.. Love how this looks. At the start of the project hannah hoch was my least favourite artist id chosen, but I think now she's probably my favourite. Love this style and can't wait to finish the board I've started focusing mainly on Dadaism

Today ive started a Eugenia Loli mixed with David Bowie & Freddie Mercury Development sheet.
focusing on mainly my favourite element of her work, the starry galaxy like background she uses a lot in her work.

To produce this board I have drawn my icons in basic pencils, just the outline of them not a lot of detail, then completely gone over the sheet in brusho inks, to use these inks I wet the complete sheet covering the drawings but just enough so I could see them still. I used greys blues purples reds and yellow inks which have mixed together well and blended in the water to create a star filled sky look.

I then went over the drawings I had done with a thin paintbrush and bleach as the bleach lifts up the ink wherever its put, so that you could see the outline of my drawings. Then instead of leaving the spaces white ive used bold acrylic paint, which I think has given me a nice sheet and has been a good experiment for me with a different media im not used to.

I like this idea but im not sure how I could add this to my final piece just yet, im still trying to work it out. I have so many ideas I don't know which ones to take on with me, but for now im happy with producing boards showing my different ideas and letting me experiment more.

Iconic mixed with artists board

This is a development sheet I started last night, as I found a new area to research into called Dadaism which is an artist movement from the 1920s which involved Hannah Hoch one of my artists. It's amazing work I love how it looks, also wanted to try and use as much mixed media on this board as I'm hoping to start smaller drawings of each iconic to frame for the final show.. All in different media! It's also got newspaper on to symbolise Diego max and his retro prints and I'm adding pieces in the background slowly from Diego Max's work.. Not sure where this board will end up but hopefully add some eugenia Loli too.. A real mix up this board..

Madonna ideas sheet complete

It's now complete and I made a massive mistake of adding lyrics but doing them in biro! The names of some songs are in colour pencil and the lyrics to each song and a few others I've filled the background with using biro.. I did this because the drawings are all coloured pencils, paint and marker to add detail and I wanted them to stand out so if I used marker it would blend in with the drawings, so I used thinner biro and I think it's ruined it a little. I don't think it looks like a good quality board but it's a shame cause I was more than happy with the 3 drawings I did of her, so I will keep the board as like a learn from my mistake kind of thing..

Madonna Ideas sheet

This is progress of a madonna development I've done, i wanted to draw madonna up to the same standard as I've done Freddie mercury and David Bowie.. Because I created a board in the first week of the project on madonna and I feel as if I've progressed a lot since then with my drawings and detail .. I used coloured pencil first shading on then went over the top with white acrylic paint. It's such a good effect, although I feel like madonna is defiantly the hardest to draw! her features and her look is just so distinctive and I've found it hard to make her look similar on this board.. But it's first attempt so I'm quite happy with it.

David Bowie development

I started a David Bowie development sheet, adding lyrics to the background of his most iconic songs as this was an idea I had early in the project. This boards just experimenting with bowies different personas throughout the years and his different songs that have the most bold lyrics. Added green ( using pencil ) in the background because this was a unique shade of green and it's not a colour that I've used to draw Bowie with, so it contrasts well.

Freddie mercury sheet complete

Happy with the outcome although I can't help but want to change the background to one colour, but I feel as if this would ruin it and I don't want to damage the drawings that I worked so hard on.. The main picture of him in the left corner is my favourite and I will defiantly be using this image again in my work.

Since this picture I've added a few more crowns to make the sheet more busy.

Developing ideas mixing artists and theme

I started a development sheet focusing on mixing ANATOMY and My icons.. Anatomy and art is the mix of diego Max's work. ( one of my chosen artists )

So I researched human anatomy and looked into things like skulls, brains and hearts and how they are drawn in anatomy and then looked at how diego adds this element into his work, he also uses nature such as  birds and butterflies so it got me thinking how I could re create his ideas to make it my own.

I had the idea of using 4 skulls each symbolising my icons, then I decided to think of what reminds me of the icons so I could add this so you could identify which skull was who!

Freddie mercury the crown and moustache because of the famous crown he wears in his wembley stadium performance in 86

Madonna a big bow because she wears them a lot in her iconic looks from the 80s

David bowie the zig zag on his face because of alladin sane album cover ( also one of his most memorable personas )

And prince with the famous purple coat and white bold collar. ( I was going to add circle sunglasses like he wears but after attempting it didn't look right as the skulls are already round where the eye is )

And the DOVES because diego max uses birds but I chose doves because they remind me of prince because of the famous song ''when doves cry''.

I used shading pencils, acrylic paint and fine liners to create the main part of the board.. The background is washed out brown and yellow using watercolour to give it the retro look diego max uses..

Happy with this board although I think it would look better drawn over newspaper or ripped out pages from books, to give it a similar look to how vinatge anatomy is usually drawn.

Freddie mercury sheet in process, I used shading pencils white acrylic paint and worked into it to add detail with finer liner.

First attempt at a face so detailed and I'm proud of outcome, I decided to keep all my images black and white to do a colourful background but I couldn't decide on a colour so it ended up being a mix of colours and I'm not 100% keen on the background as it's in pencil and I think it doesn't constrast against the black and white well.
